In the latest from the #1 New York Times bestselling phenomenon, Eve Dallas tracks down those who break the law — including the ones sworn to uphold it.

Detective Eve Dallas and her partner, Peabody, are following up on a senseless crime — an elderly grocery owner killed by three stoned punks for nothing more than kicks and snacks. This is Peabody's first case as primary detective — good thing she learned from the master.

But Peabody soon stumbles upon a trickier situation. After a hard workout, she's all alone in the locker room when the gym door clatters open; and — while hiding inside a shower stall trying not to make a sound — she overhears two fellow officers, Garnet and Oberman, arguing. It doesn't take long to realize they're both crooked — guilty not just of corruption but of murder. Now Peabody, Eve, and Eve's husband, Roarke, are trying to get the hard evidence they need to bring the dirty cops down — knowing all the while that the two are willing to kill to keep their secret.

A Scene I’d Read Twice:
The scene I really, really like is when Mavis dumped Balla on Eve.
It was struggle but Eve managed to hold the box out of reach and peek inside it of what appeared to be thick crescents of stale bread.

"Those look disgusting!"

Bella narrowed those big blue eyes slitting them into what suspiciously like a warning.

"Yaaam!"

"Is that a threat? Do you see how much bigger I am than you? Do you honestly think that's gonna work?"

"Yam!" She sniffled.

A single fat one slid down the rosy cheek.

"Okey that works." Eve dug one out. "The box would not have a baby on it if it wasn't for babies, she reasoned."

Bella clutched it and brought the biscuit from Eve's hand to her mouth to gnaw. Tears miraculously vanished into a sunny smile.
I just love the way Bella could scare big, bad, kick-ass Lt. Eve Dallas! I think scenes like this is one of the reasons that got a sucker like me hooked to this series.

I Didn’t Quite Buy:
This book tackles the issues of betrayal from within their ranks and this is not the first time that JD Robb had used this particular plot line in the In Death series. In fact there are a few books already with this same theme, so much so that it is now starting to feel like "same old, same old". And I sincerely hope that JD Robb is going to avoid that "same old, same old" pitfall for long running serieses because it is one of the reasons that makes me stop following a series.

The World:
This being Book 32 in a series, the world building has long been established years and years ago. And me being a long-time fan, of course my opinion is biased. And I still say that the world building is beautifully woven in a logical manner that even though this is already Book 32 in the series, JD Robb has managed to remain consistent to the rules of this world that she has created. Some authors tends to break their own rules and it irritates me as a reader and drops suspension of disbelief several notches. This world has managed to avoid that pitfall and thus making it so easy for readers to suspend disbelief and immerse oneself in this futuristic world.

The Characters:
One major thing about JD Robb is that she never gave me a character who is too stupid to live (TSTL). For that alone I would continue reading JD Robb. Another reason to buy JD Robb is that she gives us a flawed protagonist but managed to still fight in the side of good and then make us believe it too! Kudos to an author with that kind of talent!

General Thoughts:
I wasn't always an In Death series fan, in fact it took several books into the series before I got converted. So I understand that this series may not be for everybody. But once converted, a reader is very lucky indeed because there are a lot of books in this series that means more joyous reading hours to look forward to! :)
