Book 1 in the Shelby Nichols series

Genre: urban fantasy

About Carrots:
Shelby Nichols is an average woman who is married to the only guy she ever fell for. Her life is organized and predictable, revolving around her husband and two children. All that changes the day she stops at the grocery store for some carrots. As the cashier rings up her purchases, a gunman is busy robbing the bank inside the store. When a customer grabs the robber's mask, he is shot and everyone runs for cover. Everyone except Shelby, who finds herself face to face with the killer. The next thing she knows, she's lying on the floor with a bullet wound to her head. Luckily, the bullet only grazes her scalp, and she doesn't suspect any lasting affects until later, when she suddenly 'hears' what people are thinking. With this uncanny ability, her life takes on a whole new dimension. Her kids think she's bossy and too old to understand them, but that's nothing compared to her husband. He says he loves her, but what is it about the redhead at work that he doesn't want her to know? As if that isn't enough, the gunman knows she can identify him, and he's out to silence her forever. In her fight to stay alive, she is saved from certain death by a handsome hit-man with ties to organized crime. This pulls Shelby even deeper into danger, where knowing someone's thoughts can not only hurt her feelings, but get her killed.Source: Info in the About Carrots was taken from GoodReads at https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18469782-carrots on 28/01/2022.

My Thoughts:
I like Shelby's sass and her ordinary-ness. She is just like any other homemaker with a lawyer as a husband and two teenagers. Yet she helps the good guys. Ok, fine not all the good guys, but do good things. She is an influencer for the good. I like that! And I must be a sucker for clairvoyant stories because this is not the first clairvoyant story I got hooked into. The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris was the same theme, clairvoyance, and I got hooked into that series for a while. Until Sookie's too stupid to live (TSTL) stunts finally cured me of that. But I had to admit, it was fun while it lasted. Now here we are again, another clairvoyant theme. So originality-wise, this book is not exactly original. However, you have to give the author credit for being able to compete in a crowded market! Kudos to Colleen Helme! By the way, the cover art where the woman is holding a gun is not really apropos to the story because it was not until book 2 that Shelby got a gun. Or more appropriately, Shelby's husband got a gun.

The Narrator
About Wendy Tremont King:
I was a youth member of a travelling marionette theatre in New Hampshire. I loved puppetry. But I was really good at math. So I got a degree in Electrical Engineering and headed out to Silicon Valley. After the 1998 Loma Prieta earthquake, I returned to puppetry. I engaged in engineering and acting endeavors in parallel. Puppetry led to voice over, an agent, commercials and a SAG card. Narrating for The Lighthouse inspired me to join ACX. By 2018 I was narrating full-time in my home studio where I have produced 200 books and counting. I also conduct museum tours and throw stones at the Buffalo Curling Club.
