TROUBLE IN LOVELAND Book Blast & Giveaway

The Book

Trouble In Loveland by Jennifer Peel
Genre: contemporary romance

About Trouble In Loveland:
What teenage girl hasn’t gone to great lengths to get noticed by her crush?

Charlee Jensen is no exception. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately in the end, Ryan her much older neighbor and unrequited love has no idea she exists during her teenage years, at least not the way she wants him to.

That all changes, though, when Charlee returns home, after eight years, to work for her estranged father and Ryan … her teen crush. This time, Ryan has no problem noticing her. His only problem is that he isn’t quite sure what to do with this woman who is suddenly all grown up, beautiful and annoyingly charming.

Throw in a cute three year old, and an ex-wife that’s not quite ready to let go, and you have a whole lot of trouble in Loveland.

Trouble in Loveland is a clean, heartfelt romance filled with humor and tenderness.

Excerpt:
Ryan’s eyes seared into mine. “I was hoping I would get to dance with you tonight.”
“You were?”
“Yes, but you’ve been quite popular.” He pulled back a tad and looked down at my dress. “You look very …”
“Please don’t say grown up.”
He smiled and shook his head. “I wasn’t going to say that, I was going to say …” he tried to think of something.
“You were going to say it, weren’t you?”
He sighed. “Charlee, you really know how to make a guy feel inadequate don’t you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I find I like it.”
“You do?”
He nodded his head. “I also find you to be very …” he hesitated.
“Very what?”
“Beautiful and annoyingly charming.”
“How can somebody be annoying and charming at the same time?”
“See what I mean?” He winked.
In my heels, we were practically eye level, and our faces were mere inches apart. I could smell the sweet smell of honey on his breath; I wanted more than anything to taste it, and the way he was looking at me at that moment, I thought maybe he felt the same way. His eyes quickly turned to confusion though before he pulled me a little closer. I rested my head against his and swayed against him. It was even better than I imagined. I wanted the dance to last forever.
“By the way,” I whispered in his ear. “I find you very beautiful too.”

About Jennifer Peel:
I'm a Colorado native who currently calls Alabama home. I'm the mother of three amazing children who have grown up way too fast. I enjoy the mountains, vacations at the beach, date night with my husband, late night talks with my kiddos, touring model homes, and pink bubblegum ice cream.

I grew up on the Western Slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I learned to love the beauty of the outdoors, but not camping--unless staying overnight at the Marriott counts. I met my husband while living in Denver and then several years later we traded the beauty and majesty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains for the art and culture of Chicago, Illinois. My family and I enjoyed living near this world class city, despite the crazy cold winters, but new adventures awaited in Northern Alabama--just six hours away from Orange Beach, Alabama. These three magical places (the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Chicago, and Orange Beach) are the inspired locations used in several of my books.

An interesting tidbit about GIRL OF MINE:
My dad always worried about the cost of the electricity bill. If he walked past my bedroom and noticed that my light had been left on, he would turn it off and holler,
That’s okay, Taylor, I got your light.

It became a bit of a joke in our household. My siblings and I loved to try and catch my dad leaving on a light, just so we could say,
That’s okay, Dad, I got your light.” Now that I’m an adult with my own family, the term takes on new meaning.
The message behind it has worked its way into my new novel, Girl Of Mine.

My father brought me into this world, he cared for me, and he taught me well. He gave me my “light,” my life.
He nourished my “light” and helped me become the person I am today.
So, Dad, thanks for getting my light.
I’ll always be grateful.

The song that inspired me while writing GIRL OF MINE:
(Watch until the end. There’s a surprise!)

BEST FRIENDS FOREVER Book Blast & Giveaway

The Book

Best Friends Forever by Krysten Lindsay Hager
Book 2 of the Landry's True Colors series
Genre: YA

About Best Friends Forever:
Landry Albright hopes the new year will start off in an amazing way—instead she has to deal with more frenemy issues, boy drama, and having most of her best friends make the cheerleading squad without her. Suddenly, it seems like all anyone can talk about is starting high school next year—something she finds terrifying.

Landry gets her first boyfriend (her crush, Vladi), but then gets dumped just as things come to a head with her friends. She feels lost and left out, but finds good advice about dealing with frenemies from what she considers an unlikely source. Landry faces having to speak up for what’s right, tell the truth (even when it hurts), and how to get past the fear of failure as she gets another shot at competing in the American Ingénue TV show modeling competition. Will she get a second chance with her friends, fame, and Vladi?

Praise for the Book:
“For girls Landry’s age it’s wonderful to see that they aren’t alone and this book is giving them some very useful advice. It’s a fun story to read as well. I like that it’s so realistic.”

“I wish I could give this more stars. This book brought back so many incredible memories, things that I haven’t thought of in a long, long time. It was a well told story of a young woman who is discovering who she is without being cheesy or preachy.”

“…I LAUGHED SO HARD it was ridiculous! LOVED THIS BOOK.”

Excerpt:
“Landry, it’s gotta be so awkward for you to be going to Vladi’s school next year,” Tori said. “I mean, what if you run into him during the tour?”

“It’s a huge place,” Ashanti said. “People break up all the time. It’s not a big deal.ʺ

Tori raised her eyebrows as if to say, “Yeah, right,” and went back to her sandwich.

Meanwhile my delicious homemade soup was no longer sitting well. It never occurred to me Vladi might be around during the first pre‑freshman tour. I would be mortified if I ran into him and he was with a girl. Or worse yet, running into him, and he was with Yasmin. Plus, I hadn’t told my mom about the breakup, so if she saw him, she’d probably go over to talk to him. I could already imagine it: “Landry, Vladi’s here! Hon? Why are you hiding behind the garbage can? Your boyfriend, Vladi, is here. Come say, ‘hello.’ Stop trying to run away. Why is everyone laughing and pointing at you and calling you a ‘loser dumpee?’ What does that mean?”

Well, maybe the world would end and I wouldn’t have to deal with high school or Vladi and my mother running into each other.

****

Sadly, the world did not end, and on Thursday, we all had to go to the high school for a freshman information night from 6 to 9 p.m.

BETWEEN THE LINES Q&A and Giveaway

Q & A with Claudia:

About the Book:
1. As succinctly as possible, tell us why someone should read your book.
Between the Lines is similar to a Disney movie, there's something for both young people and adults. For adults, nostalgia plays a significant role—readers will be transported back to their childhoods. For students, they will be drawn into the characters, especially Crackers, the fearless, unfiltered tomboy (voted by readers as their favorite character) and the tugging emotions of the story. Friendships, family, values of tolerance and acceptance are all addressed—timeless topics with a universal theme.

2. Where did you draw your inspiration from for your characters?
Hattie, Beverly Jo, and Crackers are all related to friends I made over forty years ago. When deciding to write a book with prejudice and racism as the backdrop, I drew on the first relationship I had with a member of another race. I interviewed her, and immediately knew that I had to tell her story as well as my own. The decision to base a character on a real-life friend led me to create Crackers, a zany tomboy also based on a friendship I made in college. The cast of characters became the Dream Girls and although I didn't know these friends until I was much older than the characters in Between the Lines, I knew them well enough to be able to write them as children.

3. When did you first start writing your book and when did you finish?
I first started writing the book during NaNoWriMo in 2013. From start to finish, Between the Lines took fifteen months to hit book shelves.

4. What is YOUR favorite part of the book?
When I’m able to talk about it with my readers! Rich discussions about particular scenes in the book and how they moved a reader thrills me!

5. What is the main message you want to convey to your readers in your books?
Between the Lines is a story of the power of friendship in the face of intolerance and bigotry. The main message I’m conveying to readers is that we can change the world with kindness, one simple act at a time, and that life should be a celebration of differences, along with a compelling desire to learn more about the diverse backgrounds that make us unique.

6. Can we expect more books from you in the future?
The fourth book in The Samantha Series, Inherited Issues, will be out June 2015. I'm currently writing a sequel to Between the Lines as well. The working title is Beyond the Lines.

About Being an Author:
7. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? What inspired you to choose to write books?
I knew from the time I was ten years old and saw The Miracle Worker that I wanted to become a special education teacher, but always loved to write. Many friends told me I should write a book over the years, and once I'd raised my five children, I decided to give it a go. Since writing Identity Issues in 2008, I’ve written eight books. Guess I was born to write!

8. What has been the best compliment you received as an author?
As a reader, I love it when a book sweeps me away and takes me into another world. I also love characters, and when I hate for a book to end.

The best compliment I received was that I’ve touched someone’s heart with my writing, made them laugh or cry, or they related to my character in a way that opened their world and made them feel like they weren’t alone. When a reader tells me they hated for the book to end and want more, that makes my world!

9. How do you handle criticism given to you as an author?
Although it stings, I’m open to criticism, but weigh the words with what I know about writing and what I hope to learn. If the criticism is valid, I try to address the issues in my current WIP and always strive to produce a well-crafted, engaging story each time I write. Writing is a craft in which I constantly grow and improve, and I know that my work reflects that. At the end of the day, I only take criticism to heart when it’s meant to help me to hone my craft. I’ve worked with various editors and learn something new from each of them. Without constructive feedback in anything I do, I worry I’d remain stagnant, so am careful to listen and learn from each critique.

Excerpt:
“The choice is yours, boy, but understand—not deciding is making a decision. Do it before I make the decision for you. Only difference is, I won’t kill one, I’ll kill them both. Father or sister. You have all the power.”

Roth kept his tone calm and gentle. The evil coiled tightly within warmed his soul. He fancied the boy killing his father, silently rooting for the infant to survive. He could have lots of fun with her over the coming years.

The boy’s father would die either way. He’d bound and beaten him just for fun.

“Daddy? What do I do?” Tears streamed down Dylan’s face, sobs racked his entire nine-year-old battered frame. His gaze slid from his father to his baby sister, now held by Roth. When he looked back at his dad’s bruised and bloodied face, he cried harder. His dad’s eyes were swollen almost shut.

The gun shook uncontrollably in the boy’s small hand. “Daddy?”

Boredom shadowed his mind as the excitement of the climax dimmed with the child’s indecisiveness. His gaze wandered out the window above the kitchen sink.

In the back yard, a massive, wooden play structure stood, complete with swings, tunnels, overhead ladder, and a slide. How extravagant for just two children, one still an infant. His sister always belabored the little things. Shame she’s not present to witness this. He would’ve found this even more amusing.

The blond haired infant cradled roughly in his left arm actually cooed at him. Disgusting. If he kept this thing, he'd have to hire a nanny. Still, the thought of it growing up with half the powers his sister enjoyed years ago made the brat worth the trouble...If she survived today. He sighed.

* * * *

“Dylan, son, it's okay. You’re going to be all right. Look at me. Remember how we played catch this morning? When you think of me, you’ll remember how we played ball today. Okay, son?”

What else could he say in this horrific situation? His own psychotic brother-in-law was forcing Dylan to commit the most heinous act imaginable, choose between patricide and sororicide. Roth had always been the canary in the crazy mind but even Devon hadn’t seen this coming.

“Awww, isn’t this touching?” Roth muttered, no doubt weary of his twisted game. “What a little wimp. I’m growing tired of your indecision, boy. I think I’ll just slice this little bitch’s throat. After all, she’d probably just grow up to be a carbon copy of her mother, stubborn and willful. Wouldn’t want more of that in the world, would we?”

“Noooo, please. Please don’t hurt her! She’s just a baby.” Facing where he knew his son to be by the sound of his sobbing stifled his thoughts. “Son, I know this is the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but you must. Please. It’s all right. I love you more than anything.”

Dylan retched, fumbling and almost dropping the Glock 9mm pistol. It probably felt like the heaviest thing he’d ever held, certainly his first time holding a gun.

His small frame trembled, tears streamed from his eyes, hair matted to his face. Red, swollen tissue marred the right side of his face, the result of Roth’s cold temper. The kitchen table supported his slight weight as he leaned one forearm on its edge.

“Roth, please don’t do this. He’s just a boy. Be the sniveling coward you’ve always been. Do it yourself.” Articulation was slurred through split and bloody lips. His tongue slipped between the gap of two missing teeth.

Though partially open, his right eye refused to focus properly. Warm, wet liquid traced a path down his face. Gravity would always trump decency. Blood splattered his clothes. Patches of gray clouded the edges of his vision. Unconsciousness lumbered near. The drumming in his head kept pace with his rapid-fire pulse. No child should ever see his father this way, unable to protect his family. Even if his son survived Roth, which he began to doubt, he'd be scarred for life.

“Oh, Devon, Devon, Devon. You just don’t get it, do you? I’m not a coward,” Roth admonished. “I have no qualms about ending any of your lives. Watch, let me demonstrate.” His patronizing voice oozed in the air like oil spreading over water to corrupt with its filth. Roth pulled the six-inch blade from its sheath at his waist and held it to the baby’s throat, who lay cuddled in the crook of his left arm.

“No, don’t. You bastard!” Devon strained at the rope binding his hands behind his back. “Dylan, listen. Take the family crest ring off my finger. Go ahead, son, take it. It’s yours. It’s our coat of arms.” Twisting sideways forced the bonds to cut his wrists as he removed the ring from fingers slick with blood.

When his son took it, he realized these would be his last words to his boy. “Put it in your pocket, you can get a chain for it until you’re grown. That ring is a symbol of your strength, son, a symbol of your commitment to do whatever’s necessary to protect your family. Remember this, Dylan.” Dear God, he'll have nightmares the rest of his life...if he survives.
